GOStack Enables Video Streaming Security Platform to Scale on AWS

Intro

The client is a major player in the video streaming security space, providing Digital Rights Management (DRM) and anti-piracy solutions to top-tier media and entertainment companies worldwide. Their platform is responsible for securing premium content for millions of concurrent users, requiring extreme levels of reliability, scalability, and low-latency performance.

As their business grew and the demand for high-resolution streaming content exploded, their existing infrastructure struggled to keep pace. They needed a new architecture that could not only handle their current traffic but also scale to meet future demand without a linear increase in cost or operational complexity.

GOStack was engaged to lead the design and implementation of a new multi-region platform on AWS.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was scale. The client’s platform needed to handle millions of simultaneous license requests from users across the globe, with near-zero downtime. Any interruption in service could have a significant impact on their customers’ revenue and brand reputation.

The existing platform was not designed for multi-region active-active deployment, which limited its ability to serve a global audience with low latency. It also lacked the automation and self-service capabilities needed for the engineering team to move quickly and independently.

Cost management was another critical concern. The unpredictable nature of streaming traffic made it difficult to forecast infrastructure costs, and the team needed a way to optimise their AWS spend without compromising performance or reliability. This required a shift to a FinOps-driven culture, where cost was treated as a first-class metric.

Our Solution

GOStack designed and built a greenfield platform on AWS, architected from the ground up for global scale, operational efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Multi-Region EKS Architecture formed the core of the solution. The platform was deployed across multiple AWS regions in an active-active configuration, using Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) to orchestrate the containerised application. This provided extreme resilience and low-latency access for users worldwide, with traffic automatically routed to the nearest healthy region.

Amazon DynamoDB for Global Scale was chosen as the primary database for its single-digit millisecond latency and virtually unlimited scalability. DynamoDB’s global tables feature provided a fully managed, multi-region, multi-master database that kept data in sync across all regions automatically, a critical requirement for the client’s stateful DRM services.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) was used to define and manage the entire platform. Every component, from the EKS clusters to the DynamoDB tables and networking configuration, was defined in version-controlled code. This enabled the team to create, update, and replicate the entire environment in a fully automated and repeatable manner.

FinOps and Cost Optimisation were embedded into the design from day one. By leveraging a mix of EC2 Spot Instances for stateless workloads and Reserved Instances for the baseline load, GOStack was able to significantly reduce compute costs. A comprehensive observability stack provided granular visibility into resource utilisation and spend, enabling the team to make data-driven decisions about cost optimisation.

Results

The new platform transformed the client’s ability to serve their global customer base.

The multi-region architecture eliminated single points of failure and provided a highly available service that could withstand even large-scale regional outages. Latency was significantly reduced for users around the world, improving the end-user experience and strengthening the client’s competitive position.

The self-service, IaC-driven platform empowered the engineering team to move faster and more independently. They could now spin up new environments, deploy services, and scale resources on-demand without manual intervention from an operations team.

The FinOps-driven approach to cost management provided the client with full control over their AWS spend. They could now accurately forecast costs, identify areas for optimisation, and scale their platform without fear of runaway expenses.
