Intro
Interactive Gaming Group (IGG) is a leader in digital entertainment and media technology, with a vast portfolio of more than 5,000 content creators. In July 2022, they launched Ection, a new gamified streaming hub designed to help creators and brands monetise live-streamed content. Ection enriches the viewing experience with gamification features, allowing viewers to level-up, complete challenges and earn rewards for watching their favourite streamers.
As a new, high-potential platform, Ection required a modern, scalable and secure infrastructure from day one. IGG partnered with GOStack to design and build a greenfield AWS environment that would not only meet their immediate needs but also scale with their ambitious growth plans, all while following best practices for cost efficiency and operational excellence.
The Challenge
Launching a new, global-scale streaming platform presents significant technical challenges. IGG needed to ensure the infrastructure for Ection was:
- Built for Scale: The platform had to be ready to support a large and growing number of content creators and viewers from day one, without performance degradation.
- Cost-Effective: As a new venture, managing infrastructure costs was a key priority. The platform needed to be designed for efficiency, avoiding over-provisioning and leveraging cost-saving AWS services.
- Secure and Reliable: In the competitive iGaming and streaming market, platform stability and security are paramount to building trust with creators and users.
- Developer-Friendly: To innovate quickly, the IGG development team needed a self-service platform that would allow them to deploy new features with speed and autonomy, without being bogged down by infrastructure management.
Our Solution
GOStack designed and implemented a greenfield AWS environment for Ection, adhering strictly to the principles of the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
Well-Architected Foundation: The entire platform was built with the five pillars of the Well-Architected Framework in mind: Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency and Cost Optimization. This ensured that the foundation was robust, secure and built for the long term.
Containerisation with Amazon EKS: We chose Amazon EKS as the container orchestration platform. EKS provides a scalable and resilient environment for running the containerized Ection application, allowing for automated scaling and simplified management of the microservices architecture.
Infrastructure as Code (IaC): The entire infrastructure was provisioned using Terraform. This IaC approach provides a single source of truth for the platform’s architecture, enabling automated, repeatable and auditable deployments. It empowers the IGG team to manage their infrastructure with the same tools and workflows they use for application development.
Managed Databases: To handle the diverse data needs of the platform, we implemented a combination of managed database services. AWS RDS provides a managed relational database for structured data, while AWS DocumentDB offers a scalable, fully managed database for JSON-like data, ideal for the flexible data models required by the gamification features.
Security and Content Delivery: We deployed AWS WAF to protect the platform from common web exploits and used Amazon CloudFront as a global CDN to ensure low-latency, high-performance content delivery to viewers around the world.
Modern DevOps Practices: We established a modern DevOps culture, implementing CI/CD pipelines that automated the entire software delivery lifecycle. This enabled the IGG developers to achieve true autonomy, deploying code to production quickly and safely.
Results and Benefits
The partnership with GOStack provided IGG with a world-class AWS platform for their new flagship product.
- Developer Autonomy: The self-service infrastructure and automated CI/CD pipelines empowered the Ection development team to innovate at speed, releasing new features without infrastructure bottlenecks.
- Cost-Efficient by Design: By following the Cost Optimization pillar of the Well-Architected Framework and leveraging services like EC2 and managed databases, the platform was built to be highly cost-effective from the start.
- Scalable and Resilient: The EKS-based architecture provides a platform that can seamlessly scale to meet the demands of a growing global audience, ensuring a reliable experience for all users.
- Accelerated Time-to-Market: With a secure, scalable and automated platform in place from day one, IGG was able to launch Ection to the market with confidence and speed.
Transformation Impact
By partnering with GOStack, Interactive Gaming Group was able to launch its strategic new product, Ection, on a platform that was not just functional, but architected for excellence. The adherence to the AWS Well-Architected Framework and the implementation of modern DevOps practices gave them a significant competitive advantage. It allowed their team to focus on what they do best – creating innovative features for the gamified streaming world – secure in the knowledge that their infrastructure was scalable, secure and cost-efficient. This foundation has set Ection up for long-term success in the fast-paced world of online entertainment.
